Conductor

There’s nothing more important than getting our passengers safely to their destination. That’s why being a Southeastern Conductor is one of the most rewarding roles around.

As a Conductor, it’s your job to…

Ensure passengers feel welcome, comfortable and safe on our trains. From greeting people when they step on board to checking and issuing tickets, you’re there to ensure everyone’s journey runs as smoothly as possible.

Of course, sometimes there are issues with tickets or delays, which can be difficult for passengers. It’s up to you to keep them informed and do your best to help them get where they need to be.

How you’ll work

Our Conductors work a varied shift pattern, which includes weekends, bank holidays and nights. And because our railway operates 24-hours, your shifts can start and end at almost any time of day or night.

However, many of our people really value the time this gives them outside of work. They’re able to switch off the moment they finish their shift and focus on spending time with family, friends, or doing other things they love.

On top of that, you’ll get job security, lots of long-term career opportunities and great rewards. Check out the benefits you could get.

Here’s what our people say…

"To be a good conductor, you have to know your own mind, while being able to follow the rules. You are very much your own boss and you do need to think on your feet."

Next stop: qualified Conductor

When you join us, you’ll be enrolled into our Conductor Apprenticeship Programme. From learning safety procedures to creating a great passenger experience, this will give you all the knowledge and skills you need to confidently deal with any situation you may face. What’s more, it comes with a nationally recognised qualification.

Is being a train Conductor for you?

  • To be great in this role, you need to be good with people, able to remain calm under pressure, and communicate well.
  • You also need to be ready to solve any problem that comes your way and enjoy the fact that you never know what your shift might bring.
  • Given the start and end times of shifts, it may be best to have your own transport to get to and from your place of work.
