Play a crucial role in preparing trains for departure by shunting them to the correct platforms or tracks. You’ll ensure trains are shunted/driven and prepared for service, as well as communicating with Yard Movement Controllers, Train Drivers, Signallers and other agencies/contractors, both via radio in-person. You will correctly set routes for the trains by pulling points manually to ensure the trains are positioned in the correct part of the yard.
It’s likely you’ll work a varied shift pattern, which may include weekends, bank holidays and nights. Rosters vary but are based over a 35-hour week and shifts can start as early as 05:00.
However, many of our people really value the time this gives them outside of work. They’re able to switch off the moment they finish their shift and focus on spending time with family, friends, or doing other things they love.
On top of that, you’ll get job security, lots of long-term career opportunities and great rewards. Check out the benefits you could get.
You will join as a Train Movement Apprentice and will be enrolled onto an apprenticeship programme which will lead to a nationally recognised qualification.
You’ll complete a mix of classroom days and practical training with a Shunter Driver Team Leader, and it usually takes approximately 6 months to become competent.
