Train Driver

Whether it’s being a role model to the little kids waving from the platform, or knowing you’ve got hundreds of people safely to their destination, there’s nothing quite like the pride you’ll feel when you drive our trains.

As a Train Driver, it's your job to…

Get passengers where they need to be, keeping them safe and informed about their journey. It’s a big misconception that driving a train is mostly automated. It’s not. Train Drivers have to be alert and focused at all times – there’s no room for error. But the sense of achievement you’ll feel is more than you could imagine.

How you’ll work

While you’ll connect with other Train Drivers at our depots and work with Conductors and Station Staff during your shift, much of your time, once trained, will be spent on your own in the cabin of the train.

Our Train Drivers work a varied shift pattern, which includes weekends, bank holidays and nights. And because our railway operates 24-hours, your shifts can start and end at almost any time of day or night.

However, many of our people really value the time this gives them outside of work. They’re able to switch off the moment they finish their shift and focus on spending time with family, friends, or doing other things they love.

On top of that, you'll get job security, lots of long-term career opportunities and great rewards. Check out the benefits you could get.

Here's what our people say...

All the training you need to get up to speed

When you join us, you’ll be enrolled onto our Driver Apprenticeship Programme. From safety procedures to signalling rules and regulations, this will give you all the knowledge and skills you need to be a confident and capable Train Driver. What's more, it comes with a nationally recognised qualification.
